The Floating Cabin | Meant To Be EP 05

In this episode of Meant to Be we catch a water taxi out to a remote floating cabin. We initially had big paddles planned from there but something about that place made us slow down and soak in our surroundings. It was a big change of pace, and one that we really needed. Hope you enjoy!

The water taxi itself, was quite a ride. It took right around two hours to make it all the way out to the floating cabin, The Paddler’s Inn. The route wound through tons of islands and the scenery was spectacular.

When we pulled into the cove that housed the inn, we were blown away. Sure we have heard of floating houses, but we’d never actually been in one, especially not an off grid one. The setup was simply amazing. The waters were calm and shielded from the rougher open seas so it was peaceful and the home had only a gentle bob to them. We were already in love.

The cabin we were staying in used to be someone’s sewing studio before they ultimately moved away from the area. The owner of the Paddler’s Inn then repurposed the studio and made it into a living space. It had a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and even a room with a wood burning stove to help keep the place warm and dry gear. It had everything you needed and nothing you didn’t.

We had initially planned to do some big paddling days while we were staying at the Paddler’s Inn, but once we got there we couldn’t help but slow down and soak in our surroundings. We had been going really hard on work leading up to this trip and it felt like such a relief to just exist and enjoy the incredible experience. Rather than go on those long paddles, we chose some nearby coves to explore and had a few casual days on the water. We walked out to a point and read while watching the world go by. We even saw an Orca!

During our paddle out to a neighboring cove we stopped by a local’s museum. His name is Billy Proctor and he was born and raised in this remote area and never left. He’s now 90 years old! Over the years he has gathered all his findings while beach combing and exploring the area into a museum he created by his home. Even at 90, Billy was quick to recall some of his favorite finds and tell stories of his life out in this special place.

Our trip out into the Broughton Archipelago was a much needed reset. It gave us the chance to take a deep breath and shift our focus back on to each other. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of everyday life, even out on the road, but trips like these are the antidote and this one came at the perfect time.
