It’s been a while since we had a video for you but we’re excited to share a fun little project that we dreamed up almost two years ago and finally had the opportunity to bring it to life. A Beginner’s Guide to Backpacking, shot in the style of Wes Anderson!

Owen and I have both been feeling a visit was long overdue. However this time, we wanted to see the park for the first time in the winter under a blanket of snow. In order to hike in the snow, we needed to pick up a little extra gear. We hatched the idea to rent some snowshoes from REI, so we could hike in the snow out to see the Giant Sequoia trees of the Mariposa Grove.

I have been so excited about this blog post because it’s a trip recap from our FIRST EVER packrafting trip. Not only is it exciting because it was the first time we got to try our hand at packrafting in the backcountry but it also was a trip into one of our favorite places in North America, Escalante National Monument!

We’re back with a new tutorial on how to pack for a backpacking trip. Below is the video that goes into detail of how to pack your pack, then what follows in this blog post is a little more specifics on the individual pieces of gear that we use and love!

Today we’re diving into an introduction to, and the theory of backpacker meals. We will detail how we plan food for backcountry travel while also taste testing a few different major brands of backpacker meals out there.

As we crept ever closer to the US and Canadian border we found ourselves in the coastal rainforest of Washington. Those of you who have been following us for at least the last year, you know that we have fully become desert dwellers. The moss-draped trees felt completely foreign to us, but we were so hungry to dive deep into this incredible new terrain.

By now I think you have gathered that we love to hike and talk about gear. So when REI reached out and asked us to put some gear to the test it felt like a match made in heaven! We decided to make a real adventure out of it!

I’ve recently been asked this: “Any advice on cooler weather hiking clothes for women?” I’ll do you one better, and talk through the gear for both men and women! I figured that this would be some helpful information to share with you guys.

Over the next few weeks we’re going to roll out some blog posts containing photos paired with select days from my written journal from on the trail, and video daily logs that we recorded on trail. It’s no secret that it’s been a weird year for weather. In fact, just two weekends ago we were in Colorado and got snow! Just a few weeks ago we were checking the snowpack report for the Eastern Sierra’s and found that it was 180%+ higher than average.

Owen and I will be carrying separate systems for the trail to be sure that we’re capturing our experience to the best of our ability without duplicating anything or overloading ourselves with unnecessary gear.

We’re just over a month away from starting the John Muir Trail! If you’re not familiar with the trail, it’s a 211 mile section of the Pacific Crest Trail that runs from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney, in California.
