Book Club for Nowhere

Hello my friends!

We hope that this post finds you well! Suddenly, we have a lot of spare time on our hands. Being that we’re still in quarantine, one of the ways that we’ve been filling freetime is by reading… a lot! We’ve always loved reading before bed but it’s quickly become our favorite way to break up the day.

There is no better time to read something that inspires or lifts your spirits! So we’ve decided to put together a reading list of our favorite books! Most you will find are real adventure/travel inspired. Go figure!

Some of the links provided in this blog post are affiliate links. If you end up purchasing any of these books we get a very small portion of the sales. Thank you as always for supporting us and our life on the road, it gives us the opportunity to share so extensively with you all!

We personally use Kindle’s because they’re lightweight, can hold a ton of books, easy to travel with, and in times like these you don’t even have to go to the store to pick up books! All of the links for the books we’ve listed are good no matter how you read. Hardback, paperback, Kindle, or audiobook. We got you!

Let’s start with books we’ve read and love!

Adventure & Travel

The Emerald Mile by Kevin Fedarko

History and incredible facts about the Grand Canyon and the surrounding area. The Emerald Mile retells the story of the improbable fastest run through the Grand Canyon during the golden age of white water guiding. This is both Owen and MAK’s favorite book. Period.

Deep by James Nestor

Science of the ocean and body all rolled into a book about free diving. This book drops some incredible facts and is one of MAK’s favorite books she’s read in recent history.

Barbarian Days: a Surfing Life by William Finnegan

Surf, travel, and personal development.

Castaway by Lucy Irvine

Writer seeks "wife" for a year on tropical island. Interesting things ensue.

Swell: Sailing the Pacific in Search of Surf and Self by Liz Clark

Tale of a girl who sails for years alone through the Pacific and picks up a kitty along the way! Incredible book that we recommend buying a hard copy of for the pictures!

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson

A good laugh and nature.

Drive Nacho Drive by Brad Van Orden & Sheena Van Orden

Traveling the Pan-Am in a VW Vanagon. Naturally both self discovery and chaos ensue.

927 Days of Summer by Brad Van Orden & Sheena Van Orden

Continuation of Drive Nacho Drive.

Kook by Peter Heller

Journey of self discovery via surfing.

Classic American Literature

Devil in the White City by Erik Larson

A recount of the Chicago World’s Fair and a serial killer thriving during it’s preparation.

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger

Angst, humor and a critique on superficiality in society.

Where the Crawdad Sings by Delia Owens

A woman is left to raise herself out in the swamp with only plants and animals for friends. Hell of a book.

1984 by George Orwell

Dystopian world run by Big Brother.

Sci-Fi

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

A true classic.

Infinite by Jeremy Robinson

Trapped on a spaceship all alone after a multi decade quest goes off the rails.

The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. by Neal Stephenson & Nicole Galland

Time travel and the butterfly effect of seemingly harmless actions. Recommend this one via audiobook. Lots of characters that are best distinguished by the voiceover actors.

The Martian by Andy Weir

Trapped on Mars yet somehow funny and witty.

Coming up On our Reading List

MAK04702.jpg

Anthony Bourdain. Enough said.

Well that is our personal reading list! We’d love to hear what you all are reading or if you have any good book suggestions. Or if you’ve been doing anything special with your time in quarantine! Be well!
